Alternatives to Cash
Travelling outside of Manitoba? Ordering something via mail and you
don't feel comfortable using cash? Consider one of these options:
Money Orders
Money orders are used for a variety of purposes. They are a guaranteed
cheque, accepted readily as cash.
A money order can be purchased
in amounts up to $1,000.00. For your security,
Money Orders can be traced if they are lost or stolen, and all money
orders come with carbon receipts so you can keep track of your expenditures.
Travelers Cheques
For peace of mind, purchase either American Express Travelers cheques
in Canadian or US funds when planning your trip. Travelers cheques may be purchased in lots
of $20, $50, $100, or $500 with only a 1% fee placed on the purchased
amount (plus the exchange rate if purchasing U.S. Travelers cheques).
CUPAC and Golden members enjoy this product at no fee.
U.S. Dollar Drafts
U.S. Drafts are similar to traveler's cheques except that they can be
purchased in any denomination. A US draft is accepted around the world.
Like money orders, US drafts can be traced if lost or stolen, and come
with a carbon receipt for your records.
Wire Transfers
Travelling and find yourself in need of cash? Money can be wired directly
to any financial institution you enter (Credit Unions are less expensive).
Within Canada, money can reach you in as little as 10 minutes to 2 hours
(if requesting money from a Credit Union). Money can also be wired outside
of Canada, but expect a substantially longer wait depending on where
you are requesting the money.
You can also wire funds to any financial institution in the rest of
Canada or any part of the world that will accept funds.
Primary Orders
To allow secure payment of funds in a format that can only be negotiated
by the party named on that order. Intended for large withdrawals.
Cheque Certification
Funds are withdrawn from your account immediately and provides the payee with guaranteed payment.
Night Depository
To allow after hours deposits. Opened 8:30am on all business days with funds credited to your account the day of opening.
Mastercard and Visa Merchant Deposits
To allow businesses who accept Mastercard as a form of payment to deposit
their Mastercard and VISA settlement through their Credit Union account.
